COUNTING BURN DAYS

Good day to all!
I am very pleased to have this forum to ask questions and get more info on other burn programs.
I am the Traum/Burn Registrar for Children's Hospital of Michigan, a free standing pediatric Level I Trauma Center. We are seeking burn verification of our outstanding burn unit in 2010. I am unfamiliar with the verification process and am eager to hear of anyone's experiences with this process.What can I expect?
We are haveing a debate about counting of hospital days for our burn patients that are re-admitted either for planned surgery or dressing changes under anesthesiology or those unplanned admissions for graft loss, infection, etc.We use original burn percentage as a gauge for length-of-stay, ex: an 8% burn should be in house 8 or less days to be in compliance. My question has to do with how days are calculated on re-admits- do they get added to the original admit days or are we starting on a clean slate? Could they become a length-of-stay violation on their 2nd or 3rd admission?

Hi Dawn,
I am Rhonda Willis, Burn Registrar for the N.C. Jaycee Burn Center @UNC Chapel Hill.
We consider readmissions as separate admissions. There lenght of stay is gauge by the time they spend on that stay, whether its initial admission or a readmission. Its totally separate.
